Turkey & Sweet Potato Skillet for Hypertension – Anti-Inflammatory Dinner | Organ Fuel

DIAGNOSIS: HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

Low-sodium. Potassium-rich. Your blood pressure will feel the difference.

Turkey & Sweet Potato Skillet with Turmeric

High blood pressure is often described as the silent killer — and what you eat is one of the loudest ways to fight back. This skillet was built specifically around the DASH principles that cardiologists actually recommend: low sodium, high potassium, anti-inflammatory. Turkey is a lean protein that doesn't burden your cardiovascular system the way red meat does. Sweet potato is one of the most potassium-rich foods available — and potassium is nature's counterbalance to sodium, actively helping your blood vessels relax and your pressure drop. Turmeric brings curcumin to the table, one of the most studied anti-inflammatory compounds in existence, with direct links to improved endothelial function — the health of the vessel walls that regulate your blood pressure. One pan, 30 minutes, and your cardiovascular system genuinely thanks you.

Ingredients

For the Skillet
  • 300 g ground turkey
  • 300 g sweet potato peeled and diced into 1.5cm cubes
  • 1 medium red bell pepper diced
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • ½ tsp ground cumin
  • ¼ tsp black pepper freshly ground
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley chopped
  • 60 ml water

Equipment

  • 1 Large skillet with lid (min. 28cm)
  • 1 Wooden spoon
  • 1 Chef's knife
  • 1 Cutting board
  • 1 Vegetable peeler (for sweet potato)
  • 1 Garlic press or mincer
  • 2 Small prep bowls (for prepped ingredients)
  • 1 Measuring spoons set
  • 1 Kitchen scale
  • 1 Serving spoon

Method

  1. Peel and dice your sweet potato into roughly 1.5cm cubes — keeping them uniform means they cook evenly. Dice the bell pepper, finely chop the onion, and mince the garlic. Having everything prepped before the pan heats up makes this recipe genuinely effortless.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened and translucent. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute — just until fragrant. Don’t let it brown, just soften.
  3. Add the ground turkey to the skillet and break it up with a wooden spoon. Cook for 5–6 minutes until fully cooked through and no longer pink. Stir in the turmeric, cumin, and black pepper now — coating the turkey directly in the spices gives you a much deeper, richer flavour than adding them later.
  4. Add the diced sweet potato, red bell pepper, and water to the skillet. Stir everything together well. Cover with a lid and cook on medium-low heat for 12–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sweet potato is completely tender when pierced with a fork.
  5. Remove the lid and let any remaining liquid cook off for 1–2 minutes. Taste and adjust pepper if needed — no salt. Scatter fresh parsley generously over the top and serve straight from the skillet.

NOTES

This recipe was created specifically for people managing high blood pressure. No added sodium — potassium from sweet potato actively counterbalances sodium in the body and helps blood vessels relax. Ground turkey is used over red meat deliberately — it delivers high-quality protein without the saturated fat load that burdens the cardiovascular system. Always consult your doctor or nutritionist before making significant dietary changes.
